FEATURE | A Guiding Light: Nurturing Minds and Hearts

In a profession that calls for more than just lessons and lectures, some teachers stand out not because they seek the spotlight, but because they quietly light the way for others.

One of them is Ma’am Annielu Mancao Charcos—a faculty member and Student Activity Coordinator of UM Ilang High School.

Her story began far from the classroom she now calls home. Teaching, after all, wasn’t her first dream. She once walked the path of numbers and balance sheets as an accountancy student, until a spark during NSTP back in her days led her to discover her calling.

“𝑴𝒂𝒚𝒃𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒕, 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆.”

Since then, Ma’am Charcos has become more than a teacher to her students. For her, teaching is not simply about academics, it’s about transformation. At the end of each day, she reflects not only on scores, but on whether she has helped her students grow.

“𝑫𝒊𝒅 𝑰 𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎, 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒂 𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆?”

As both a teacher and the Student Activity Coordinator, Ma’am Charcos juggles responsibilities that go beyond lesson plans, from handling classes to guiding student leaders and overseeing school events, yet always teaches both the mind and the heart. “Not everyone can get a 90,” she says. “𝑩𝒖𝒕 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒘.”

If there’s one thing she hopes her students remember, it’s not how strict she was. It’s that she cared enough to help them become better people. “When they graduate,” she says, “I hope they carry with them not just lessons, but values.”

Honesty and integrity, teamwork, innovation, and excellence—the same core values of the university that she believes should live not only in the school’s motto but in the hearts of its learners. To her, these values start at home, grow within the classroom, and extend to the community. “Continue living them,” she reminds her students.

In a world that often rushes and forgets, Ma’am Charcos stands as a gentle reminder to slow down, to center life on goodness. “Be positive always,” she tells her students. “And let God be at the center of everything.” For Ma’am Charcos, teaching is a privilege—a chance to shape lives and nurture unpolished diamonds, helping them shine long after the bell has rung.

As National Teachers Month reminds us, it is not just a celebration of work, but a celebration of heart. Ma’am Charcos embodies that heart—who guides, who nurtures, and who believes in the potential of every student she meets.

Perhaps that’s what makes Ma’am Charcos truly extraordinary, not just as a teacher, but as a light that guides others to find their own.
