OPINION | Manners aren't a trendthey're a reflection of respect.

Just a week ago, a classmate asked to borrow my alcohol. I responded with a lighthearted, “What’s the magic word?”—expecting a simple “please.” Instead, they replied, “Gina ba, wala namay uso ng mag-please.” I was honestly flabbergasted. Since when did basic courtesy become outdated? Since when was proper etiquette considered a trend?

Let’s be clear: manners should never depend on what’s “𝘶𝘴𝘰.” They’re not a fad to follow—they’re a standard to uphold. Saying “please” and “thank you,” greeting teachers with “good morning” or “good afternoon,” standing up to show respect—these aren’t just formalities. They’re reflections of our character. They show how deeply we value respect, not just in words, but in action.

It’s alarming how many students today dismiss these gestures as unnecessary. But respect should never go out of style. If we normalize rudeness and entitlement, what kind of future are we building? It saddens me to think of a generation that forgets the power of kindness, humility, and courtesy.

Let’s bring back good manners—not because they’re trendy, but because they’re right. Because they remind us who we are, and who we aspire to be.
