The Sierra Madre mountains, home to the last hunter-gatherer group, the Agta or Aetas. Significantly, the Sierra Madre in Luzon also acts as a natural shield during storms.

Research shows that the mountains affects the intensity and distribution of rainfall during tropical cyclones. It slows down tropical storms and increases rainfall in the area. For instance, Tropical Storm Ondoy had its precipitation patterns changed due to the mountain's topography.
